Since 1991, Dan Gazit, PhD, has investigated various skeletal regeneration models using adult stem cells and gene therapy. His group has pioneered the use of genetically engineered mesenchymal stem cells and their applications in skeletal tissue repair. The group also has developed multimodality imaging strategies to enable tracking of stem cell survival, differentiation and proliferation in living subjects. The group's studies have been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, the European Commission, the U.S. Department of Defense and biotechnology companies. The group has published frequently in high-impact journals in regenerative medicine, such as the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Stem Cells, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, Nature Protocols, Biomaterials and Molecular Therapy. Its primary goal is to perform research and translational studies that directly lead to and support the use of stem cells to treat human skeletal disorders.
