For nearly three decades, the Engman Laboratory has contributed to our knowledge of the pathogenesis of tropical infectious diseases and the molecular genetics and cell biology of trypanosomes, unicellular parasites causing African sleeping sickness and Chagas disease. Other areas of study include exploration of cilia as environmental sensors and regulators of development, prevention and treatment of autoimmune myocarditis, and biomarker discovery for prostate cancer. Finally, more than 90 scientists, physicians and physician-scientists have received training in the Engman Lab and have gone onto successful careers in academia, industry, and government research.
