Sumeet Chugh, MD, directs the Arrhythmia Research Program and Laboratory at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, focused on identifying novel ways of predicting, treating and preventing heart rhythm disorders. The program is supported by research funding from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association. Chugh initiated and continues to direct the Oregon Sudden Unexpected Death Study, a large, comprehensive assessment of sudden cardiac arrest in a community of 1 million residents ongoing for more than 13 years. As of Feb. 1, 2015, this program was expanded to Ventura County, California, forming the PRESTO network (PREdiction of Sudden death in MulTiethnic cOmmunities). This research continues to shed light on the risk factors, triggers and genetic defects related to sudden cardiac arrest, with the overall goal of designing novel techniques for treatment and prevention of this condition. Chugh has led an independently and continuously funded research program since 2001, and has published more than 120 peer-reviewed scientific papers (93 original scientific papers, 20 review papers, 11 editorials), five book chapters and 176 scientific abstracts in the fields of cardiac electrophysiology and sudden cardiac death. He is a peer reviewer for more than 15 scientific journals and is on the editorial boards of several, including Circulation, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), HeartRhythm, JACC Clinical Electrophysiology and the Journal of Interventional Cardiac Electrophysiology. He serves as editor of the Rhythm Disorders section for JACC, associate editor for the International Journal of Cardiology — Heart and Vessels and associate director for the Global Heart journal.
