Lawrence S. Czer, MD, co-founded the Cedars-Sinai Heart Transplant Program in 1988 with Alfredo Trento, MD. This renowned program is currently the largest in the United States. Excellent clinical skills, innovative practice, and advanced research make Dr. Czer a leading expert in heart transplantation. His research focuses on the mechanisms of cardiac stem (progenitor) cell differentiation and migration in normal and diseased human hearts; molecular, morphological, and functional changes in hearts after transplantation and after insertion of a ventricular assist device; molecular mechanisms of bioprosthetic and native valve calcification; and Cardiothoracic Tissue Repository. Dr. Czer employs molecular, cellular, transgenic and wild-type animal, and human tissue and cells to understand the biology of cardiac stem cells in normal and diseased hearts and to understand mechanisms of cardiac valve calcification. His research has established and maintained a repository of cardiac, vascular, and thoracic tissue for research purposes.
