The research of Ali Khoynezhad, MD, focuses on spinal cord ischemia resulting in paraplegia that may be attenuated using novel anti-inflammatory medication such as NMDA-receptor blockers, adjuncts such as ischemic pre- and post-conditioning, and novel stem cell therapeutics. The effectiveness of these promising agents are tested validated in animal model, effective dose-response is established, prior to first-in-human experiments. His other project entails transcatheter aortic valve replacement in mechanical aortic valve prosthesis. Khoynezhad is a leader in outcome research of patients undegoing open and endovascular procedures for aortic dissection. In addition, he developed a classification for endovascular repair of acute type B dissection predicting false lumen-patency in mid- and long-term follow-up. His current research focus is modulating ischemic response of spinal cord, developing in vitro model of acute type A dissection, endovascular repair of aortic root and ascending aorta, as well as transcatheter valve replacement in patients with mechanical aortic valve. He is working on a microsurgical approach to intracardiac operation using transfemoral access and minimally invasive endoluminal cardotid-subclavian bypass and transcatheter aortic valve replacement in mechanical aortic valve prosthesis.
